It can be quite tormenting waiting for a time when you can take a pregnancy test, wondering if its too early and should you wait a few more days just in case. All to pee on a stick! But there are better times to do it then others and this article will give you a quick run down on how home pregnancy tests work and what that means in terms of when is best to take one.

Tests done at home test your urine for a pregnancy hormone called hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadoropin). It is a hormone that is only produced when a woman is pregnant and is made by the placenta after the embryo implants itself into the uterus lining. At first levels are low, but because it builds up quickly, doubling each day, it just takes a few days for levels to become a lot higher. It is this hormone that causes pregnancy symptoms that some women experience. So if you test yourself too early you may get a negative result when in fact the levels of hCG were just too low for the test to find in the urine.

There was a recent study carried out by FertilityFriend who were looking to find what the best DPO or day post ovulation pregnant women got a positive test result. On average it worked out that day 13 to 14 was best. (after your last ovulation). Testing 10 days or less gave only 10 per cent of women an accurate positive result, the other 90 per cent of women got false negatives. Therefore there is no need to waste money on home pregnancy tests taking them too soon. Wait until at least the 13th day to avoid extra costs and the stress.

Make sure with any home test you read the instructions carefully and follow them precisely. Some ask you to collect the urine in a cup and then dipping the test in it or collecting a drop from it, others say to put a stick in the stream of urine. (Always fun trying to not pee on your hand!) Then wait however long is specified for your result.

Remember: if asking yourself when to take a pregnancy test – morning urine is best because you don’t get to dilute the pee by drinking water before you test.
