When I should take a pregnancy test?

Nowadays, finding out if you are pregnant or not without waiting for a pregnancy sign is fairly simple and that’s due to the pregnancy test’s invention. There are two types of pregnancy tests – clinic tests(based on blood) and home tests(based on urine). Most women choose to take a home pregnancy test because of its lower price and the intimacy that it can offer them: finding out if they are pregnant in the privacy of their own home.

Home pregnancy tests are the most used not only for their advantages (compared to the clinic tests), but for their features too: most of them have an accuracy of over 99%, are very easy to use(having very detailed instructions) and their result is very easy to read too. However, most women have questions, especially when it comes to taking a test: When should I take a pregnancy test? This is a good question because if you don’t know the proper moment, you can take it too early and get an inaccurate result or you can take it too late, with the same result.

First of all, specialists recommend to take a home pregnancy test 2 weeks after ovulation, which means 2 weeks after the moment you think you have conceived, or the day you have missed your period (if your period is missing). But, for most women, that means too much time as they would like to find out as early as possible – so they could make the decision if they want to change their life or not (because a pregnancy will certainly change a woman’s life for ever).

Well, you can find out the truth earlier than 2 weeks after ovulation, but there is not an established day because any woman’s system acts differently. For a better understanding, you should know how these pregnancy tests work: they have to detect the presence and levels of hCG in a woman’s body, using her urine. This hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) appears in a woman’s body only when she gets pregnant or when she takes certain types of medicines which contain hCG. The hCG is produced by the placenta after the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterine lining and that occurs at least 6 days after ovulation. So, as there is no hCG in your body until that period, it’s useless to take a test because it would give you a negative result even if you are indeed pregnant.

As a conclusion, the earliest moment you can take a pregnancy test is 7 days after ovulation, but for the most accurate result you should take a pregnancy test 2 weeks after or the day you have missed your period.
