What Can Affect a Pregnancy Test?

The home pregnancy tests that women can use today are very accurate, almost 100% in fact. The problem that women have is whether they follow the directions precisely as they need to do, and if they take the test at the best time as they should. But often women trying to conceive are anxious to know, and so may take the test too soon for very reliable results.

How early a test can be taken depends on how long ago ovulation happened, and if conception happened when implantation occurred as well as the brand of the test. Different brands of test have different sensitivities so that some can detect hCG even at small amounts whereas others need it to be a bit higher. But what is hCG and what does ovulation have to do with it?

Ovulation is the process of an egg being released where it then goes into the fallopian tube and lives for 12 to 24 hours unless it is fertilized. Sperm can live three to five days and so fertilization odds are increased if sperm is already in the tube at the point of ovulation. When an egg is fertilized it will stay in the tube for a few days before it travels to the uterus where it implants into the lining. The body does not recognize itself as being pregnant until implantation. At that point hCG production starts.

So it can be between three to ten days before the pregnancy hormone is present but levels are very low at first and so home tests cannot detect it straight away. It is possible but unlikely to get a positive result as early as 7 days after ovulation but realistically it can be 9 days and tests that are not as sensitive can need 14 days.
