In today’s age of modern medicine there are a lot of options available to those wanting to be a parent. Some fertility problems can be treated or overcome, and for the few who still cannot there are still other options to have a child. It is not an easy journey to undertake, it can be long, physically difficult and emotionally exhausting. For some it ends with joy and success, but for some there is pain and regret. This article looks at wanting to be a parent – getting past infertility and the options.

Getting past infertility together

The stress wanting to be a parent can put on your relationship can be enormous, some couples in fact do not survive it especially if there is no happy ending. It can certainly take over your lives so make sure you communicate with each other, understand that both of you have different ways of coping and that it is okay. Use resources offered to you and if there is a loss of a child, make sure you take time to both grieve that loss before you consider whether you want to try again.

Wanting to be a parent – Getting past infertility, the options

Donor Sperm – if the problem is with the male’s sperm there is the option of using donor sperm, this way while the child will not have a genetic connection to the father, it will to the mother. In some cases when there is a problem with sperm in vitro fertilization can still use that sperm to fertilize an egg from the female and them plant that back into the woman.

Surrogacy – if the woman cannot carry the child, eggs from her and sperm from the male can be taken, and when fertilization occurs it can be planted into a surrogate woman who will carry the child to term for you. Or of the woman has problems with her eggs, the surrogates egg can be used with the male’s sperm.

Donor egg – If the woman has problems with her eggs or producing them, a donor egg can be used much like donor sperm can be used.

Adoption – this is not just something couples do when they cannot have children, sometimes couples adopt because they like the idea of giving a child a chance at a home and family they currently do not have. There is domestic adoption, adopting within your country or international adoptions, adopting from overseas. The latter has become more popular recently in countries like U.S as it is actually cheaper and the process can be shorter. This will involve trips abroad of course.

Conclusion

Being a parent is a lifelong thing, not just something you do from a baby to 18. There are things to consider about all the options open to you, surrogacy or adopting means accepting there is not a genetic link between you and the child, and not being able to have the experience of pregnancy. But it is important to remember that a bond with a child is not just built during pregnancy or when they are young, it is long process. But often these alternative options to help you become a parent are costly and are certainly emotionally difficult, so be prepared.
