The accuracy of pregnancy tests

A pregnancy can change a woman’s life for ever, therefore it’s very important for any woman to find out as early as possible if she is pregnant or not(so she can have the possibility to decide what she wants to do about it). Nowadays, women don’t have to wait for the pregnancy signs or to go on a clinic to find out the truth because pregnancy tests were invented and they are within everybody’s reach. As they want to be sure if they are pregnant or not, most women are very interested about the accuracy of those pregnancy tests.

First of all, there are two types of pregnancy tests: clinic tests(based on blood) and home tests(based on urine), which have different levels of accuracy. For a better understanding, you should know how these tests are working:both types are based on the same principle: they have to detect the presence and levels of hCG in a woman’s body. But here comes the difference: unlike home pregnancy tests(which have to detect the hCG using the woman’s urine), clinic tests have to detect it using her blood – and as this hormone firstly appears in the blood, it is normal for them to detect the presence and levels of hCG faster, giving a more accurate result.

Although there is this big difference between home tests and clinic tests, the difference regarding their accuracy is only of 1 percent. Most home pregnancy tests have an accuracy of over 99% therefore this difference doesn’t matter too much for women when they have to choose which type of pregnancy test to use. Most women prefer home tests and that’s due to their big advantages over the clinic tests: they are much cheaper and give you the possibility to find out if you are pregnant in the privacy of your own home.

However, any type of pregnancy test you would choose, it won’t get you an accurate result if you are taking it too early. As we already said, pregnancy tests have to detect the presence and levels of hCG in a woman’s body, but this hCG(pregnancy hormone) does not appear in a woman’s body until 6 days after ovulation. Why not? Because it is produced by the placenta after a fertilized egg implants the uterine wall; from biological causes, this does not occur until 6 days after ovulation. So, if you take any pregnancy test during those 6 days after the moment you think you have conceived, you won’t get an accurate result because even if you are pregnant your test will give you a negative result, as there is no hCG to be detected. For the most accurate result, it’s recommended to take it 2 weeks after ovulation or the day you have missed your period.

As a conclusion, pregnancy tests are very accurate if you are taking them at the proper moment. If you feel uncomfortable to go to a clinic, or if you don’t want to spend too much money on a pregnancy test, you can take a home one which solves you both problems, giving you a very accurate result too.
