Can I ovulate during or just after my period?

Women who have a regular cycle, meaning they have their period every 28 days or 30 days or whatever their length is are very unlikely to experience ovulation during a period. What an Ovulation Calculator is and How it Works

Ovulation is the time during a woman’s monthly cycle when she is most fertile and more likely to conceive. It is when one (or rarely both) release an egg that has matured and is ready to be fertilized. If there is sperm inside you already from unprotected sex that is 5 days old or less it can fertilize the egg. What do the terms ‘regular cycle’ or ‘irregular cycle’ mean?

A cycle refers to the length of time from day one of your last period to day 1 of your next period. The average length that a lot of doctors or articles use is 28 days but in fact there are more women who have a different number than there are that have that cycle length. Now if you have a constant cycle length each month – allowing 1 or 2 days off on some months, that is a regular cycle. For example if month one you have 30 days, months 2 is 30 days, month 3 is 29 days, month 4 is 30 days, month 5 is 31 days – this is a regular cycle of 30 days. Most women have a regular cycle, whether it is a short cycle of 21 days or a long cycle of 35 days or somewhere in between.

How long does an egg live for when it is waiting to be fertilized?

Not long at all! An egg will live for around 12 hours once it is mature and has been released by the ovary for fertilization. However that does not mean you only have 12 hours each month to have sex to get pregnant! Sperm are a lot tougher and can live inside you for around 5 days. So you could have unprotected sex anywhere between 5 days before ovulation to the day of ovulation and conceive. If you ovulate on day 14 and you have unprotected sex on day 9 for example a sperm from that sex could successfully fertilize the egg when it is released.
