Pregnant but negative pregnancy test ?

Most women take a pregnancy test when they have a missed period or a late one or when they think they have some of the pregnancy symptoms. They usually choose the home pregnancy tests not only because of their lower price, but also because they give them the possibility to find out if they are pregnant from the privacy of their own home.
Home pregnancy tests are very accurate, most of them having an over 99.5% success rate, but sometimes they can give you an inaccurate result and that usually happens because of some of your mistakes. It’s very important to be careful and follow exactly the test instructions because otherwise you might compromise the result and get a false one.
A possible such situation would be a pregnancy but a negative pregnancy test result. Usually this happens from the womens’ fault.
There are many mistakes which women can make and we will try to tell you the most important. First of all, the most frequent mistake is the moment of taking the test: if you take it 2 weeks after ovulation or the day you have missed your period, as the doctors recommend, you will get a result with an accuracy of over 99%, but if you take it too early, until 6 days after ovulation for example, you will surely get a negative result, which can be a false one. Why? Because these tests are working by detecting the hCG (a hormone which appears in a woman’s body only if she is pregnant), but from biological causes the hCG can not be produced until 6 days after ovulation, which means that your test won’t have any hCG to detect and will give you a negative result at that time, even if you are pregnant.
Other possible mistakes, which can lead to a negative pregnancy test result although you are pregnant, could be regarding the way you are taking the test. Most of those mistakes are the consequences of the women’s inattention and here are some of them:
- the test stick is not saturated enough with your urine
- the cup that you are using for your urine can have some leftover soap or detergent deposits which can compromise the test result
- the moment you read the test is too late and so you can get an “evaporation line” (that means you will see a single line not because you are not pregnant but because the second one has already evaporated).
As a conclusion, those over 99% accuracy levels are very true, so if you are in the situation pregnant but negative pregnancy test – this could only be due to some mistakes you could have made.

I am sorry but your facts here are not true in my case at all.
I have 3 children at the moment and each time I fell pregnant and took a test purchased in the chemist it read negative when it should in fact read positive. I have never tested until I have been over 7 days late on my period so when my cycle is 30 days this is well over ovulation date so this is not the reason, I also completely saturate the stick each time so this is also not the problem. With my last pregnancy I went to the Dr after my period was a week late and it came back with a straight positive. Certainly in my experience, especially as now I am 10 days late so possibly pregnant with my fourth child with another chemist bought test being negative, beginning to conclude that these tests are a total waste of money and its is not my doing at all.
hi Louise!
you’re right there are many problems with these tests. all you can do in this case when your period is late try a home test and if the result is negative, go see a Dr, if you feel the test “lied” to you.
these tests are a little bit insecure, depending on price you paid for. also you must read very well the instructions and be careful with the steps to do. you should look, before buying it, to see the expiring date.
a lot of tests give the right result if they were used properly.
thanks. see you around here.
I also disagree with your so called facts. I have 2 children and with my last daughter I took 3 different tests starting after my period was already 5 days late. It didnt show up on a home pregnancy test untill 9 days after being late and I also did everything right including using first morning urine. I was told the reason it didnt show up is because some woman can ovulate late in their cycle which is what happened to me because I was actually 11 days less along in my pregnancy then I should have been accourding to their calculations. I actually concieved right before my next expected period. So I am not saying the test lied but I am saying that your facts are only based on woman that ovulate in the middle of their cycle which most of the time is the case but every woman is different so these facts could be giving many woman that are in fact pregnant an idea that they are not. I am also 2 weeks late again which never has happened except when I was pregnant and am also having lots of symptoms of pregnancy and believe I am pregnant and again 12 days after late period I am still getting negative results so I am going for a blood test next week because I really have no faith in the facts of pregnancy tests anymore.
