Pregnancy Testing – The First Confirmatory Test

A pregnancy test measures the levels of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropic or hCG, otherwise called the pregnancy hormone. It is present in the blood and urine and is made when an egg that has been fertilized plants itself into the lining of the uterus around six days after fertilization. At first the hormone levels are low but it rapidly increases each day so usually a week after a missed period is a good time to test the urine for hCG.

There are a lot of home pregnancy tests available to buy on the market and they are all simple to use. They basically ask you to collect urine to test for hCG. The early morning urine is best as the hormone is unlikely to have been diluted down at this time. The strip in the kit is either dipped into the urine you collect in a cup, or you hold the stick in your urine stream. The test results are displayed in different ways, some use a + and – sign whereas others use pink or purple lines.

It is possible to get a negative result even when pregnant so if you get a negative but are sure you are pregnant, look at the timing and regularity of your menstruation, take another test and visit your doctor.

Despite common belief it is possible for a test to give you a false positive too. This can happen when the hCG is present in the urine but the egg has not correctly developed leading to what is called a chemical pregnancy.

There are physical signs to look for too if you suspect you are pregnant. Tiredness, nausea, tender breasts, urinating more frequently are all early signs. However you cannot rely on these or a home test alone to be 100% sure, for that you need to visit your doctor.

It is a wonderful experience carrying a baby, just make sure you take care of yourself and the baby and start your prenatal care as soon as possible.
