”Am I pregnant?” – This is the most frequent question women who have missed a period or even have a late one ask themselves; and this is the day they have to find out if their life will change or not. Most women find home pregnancy tests as the best way to verify. Most of these tests have an accuracy of over 97-98% and that’s the reason they are so popular.
But, as you all know, you can not get an accurate result any day you choose to take the test. Now, you are probably wondering: When is that big day? Which is the perfect day?
Well, it is fairly hard to find a perfect day because every woman’s body is different and it acts differently. For a better understanding it is important to know how these tests work.
Home pregnancy tests all have the same principle of working: the detection of the presence and levels of hCG (the pregnancy hormone) in a woman’s body. This hormone, technically called human chorionic gonadotropin, appears in a woman’s body only when she gets pregnant or if she is getting certain types of drugs. It is produced by the placenta after the implantation of a fertilized egg in uterine wall – and this does not occur until 6 days after ovulation.
Considering this information, we can conclude that until 6 days after ovulation it is impossible to have the hCG in your body. Therefore any home pregnancy test you would use, it won’t give you an accurate result – because it does not have any hCG to detect and the result will always be a negative one.
The earliest moment you can take a pregnancy test (with the possibility of getting an accurate result) is 7 days after ovulation, but don’t take this as a rule. Of course that if you take the test so early you have to be careful every step of the way. It is very important to follow the test directions exactly and it would be recommended to get a more sensitive pregnancy test to increase your chances of getting an accurate result.
So we explained which is the earliest day you can take a pregnancy test, but we haven’t yet specified the most indicated and recommended day. Most doctors recommend to take it 2 weeks after ovulation. But now, if those 2 weeks haven’t passed yet and your period is missing it is indicated to take it the day you have missed your period. To understand better take a look at some statistics about a good pregnancy test’s accuracy:
- taking the pregnancy test 4 days before the next period – accuracy of 69%
- taking the pregnancy test 3 days before the next period – accuracy of 83%
- taking the pregnancy test 2 days before the next period – accuracy of 93%
- taking the test the day the period has been missed – accuracy of 99%
As a conclusion, the earliest day you can take a pregnancy test is 6 days after ovulation, but the most indicated moment to take one and get an accurate result is 2 weeks after ovulation, or the day you have missed your period.
