Negative Pregnancy Test Result? Test Again!

Had unprotected sex? Well you are going to need to take a pregnancy test at the least so here is some information on them so you know how they work and use them correctly.

Most pregnancy test results are now around 99% accurate if you follow the instructions properly. This is the same accuracy as a urine test done by your doctor. Home tests are easy to get from a pharmacy and of course the great thing about them is you can do it in privacy. They are easy to use, usually you either have a stick that you hold in your stream of urine, or that you put in a cup of your urine, or you have to put 1 or 2 drops on a chemical strip using a dropper.

All tests are looking for the same hormone that is only produced when a woman is pregnant called hCG, human chorionic gonadotropin. This hormone enters your blood and urine when you are pregnant and this is the hormone that causes early pregnancy symptoms such as tender breasts and morning sickness. Traces begin to show around 10 days after fertilization and it is very common for women to test too soon and get a negative result when in fact they are pregnant.

As much as you want to take the test there is no point in rushing it to get results you cannot trust. The best and most accurate time to take a home pregnancy test is 5-10 days after your missed period. If you still get a negative result try a few days later. If that is still showing negative and your period has still not arrived make an appointment with your doctor. However it is likely that if you have tested 2 to 3 times at this point and you have followed the instructions of the kit that you are not pregnant.

Things to know when taking a test

• Use your first morning urine as hCG levels are easier to detect. At the very least use urine that has been held in the bladder for at least 4 hours.
• Do not drink lots of water before taking the test as this can dilute the hCG levels.
• Read every instruction and follow them carefully.
• Some fertility drugs and medications can affect the pregnancy test results so check the label and ask your doctor if you are still unsure.
