Most women become tense and they panic if their period’s late or if it’s missing. Fortunately, now they have the possibility to find out earlier if a late period is a pregnancy sign, without having to wait for other signs due to pregnancy tests. They even have the possibility to find out the truth in the privacy of their own home by taking a home pregnancy test – and this is even cheaper than the clinic tests.
Home pregnancy tests are very accurate(usually over 99%), they’re very easy to use and their results are very easy to read too; but sometimes surprises can appear and the test’s accuracy is questioned. One of the most frequent surprising situations is a negative pregnancy test though the period’s late. What would you think in such a situation? Are you pregnant or not?
First of all, it’s very likely to get a negative result even if your period’s late because a late period doesn’t necessarily mean a pregnancy; it could be a consequence of a very stressful period, of a sudden loss of weight or of an organic illness.
Secondly, the negative pregnancy test could be a false one and there could be many possible reasons for this. One of the reasons could be the moment you take the test: if you take it too early it’s possible that your body doesn’t yet have enough hCG(pregnancy hormone) to be detected, so the result would be a negative one even if you are pregnant – a false negative one.
Another reason for getting a false negative result could be the way you take the test or the moment you read its result. Firstly, you should be careful and follow exactly the test’s instructions, avoiding some mistakes that could lead to such a result. Other frequent mistakes are: the test stick is not saturated enough or the cup that you use for your urine is not clean enough, having leftovers of soap or detergent which can compromise the result.
Also, if you don’t read the test’s result in the “reaction time” (usually 5-10 minutes) you can get a false one, meaning: if you read it too early you may see a single line because the other one usually appears later, after a few minutes; and if you read it too late you may also see a single line and that’s because the other one has already evaporated.
As you can see, a negative pregnancy test though your period’s late could be an accurate one, but it could also be a false one from multiple causes – there are many possible mistakes you could be making. However, if you are sure you didn’t make any mistake when you took the test, but you are still doubting the result, you should see a doctor and find out what is happening.
