A delayed period is a serious reason of worry for most women, especially for those who usually have a very regular period. Of course, the first thing that any woman does is to go on a pharmacy and buy a pregnancy test. Now, what do you do if, after you take the test, you get a negative answer? This is a frequent situation for many women and there could be many possible explanations for it.
First of all, as we all know, those pregnancy tests’ role is to detect the presence and lower levels of hCG in the woman’s body, exactly in her urine. This hCG is the abbreviation of human chorionic gonadotrophin, (known as the pregnancy hormone too), a hormone that appears in a woman’s body the moment she gets pregnant. This hormone can not be produced until implantation, and implantation can not occur before at least 6 days after ovulation. So, as it is known and proved that if the hCG doesn’t exist in a woman’s body, certainly, a pregnancy test would give a negative result (because it hasn’t any hCG to detect), we can conclude that taking a test in the first 6 days after ovulation is a lost time. So, the first and the most probably reason of getting a negative result although your period is late, could be the fact of taking the pregnancy test too early. There are many women who get a correct answer even to 7 days after ovulation, but most doctors recommend to take it 2 weeks after the ovulation.
If you are sure that you didn’t take the pregnancy test too early, and your period is a regular one, don’t worry because there could still be many reasons for that happening. Now take another test and make sure that, this time, it’s a more sensitive one, because the other/s could have a lower-sensitivity and so couldn’t detect the presence oh hCG. Then read the best-before date and make sure that it is not expired because that could seriously affect the result and lead to an incorrect result. After that, all you have to do is to follow all of the test’s instructions and to not distract from them. Another important thing to consider is the moment you take the test. It is recommended to take it with your first morning urine because this contains the biggest amount of hCG, and so the test can detect it easily.
Even if you follow all this instructions and your pregnancy test result is still a negative one you shouldn’t worry, because it could be right. Your period could be late from other reasons. There are many women who have a delay or even a missing period when they pass by a very stressful period or when they have an organic illness or a suddenly loss weight.
You can see that there are many possible explanations for this situation so you shouldn’t worry. But, for your certainty, you should see a doctor and take a blood pregnancy test because it has a more accurate result.
