You cannot just take a pregnancy anytime and expect top accurate results. There is a certain time when it is best to do it and that time depends on which type of test you are taking.

There are two types of tests, one tests the urine and the other tests the blood. Both though look for the same hormone, one that is only produced by the body when a woman is pregnant. Called human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG it can be detected 6-8 days after ovulation when a blood test is done or 14 days after ovulation when a urine test is done.

A lot of women when they suspect they may be pregnant take a home test first and this is one that tests the urine. They are convenient, private and relatively inexpensive. You need to use the first urine of the morning and if the result is positive visit your doctor for a confirmation blood test and a pelvic examination.

Taking the home test at the right time is important otherwise you may get a negative result when in fact you are pregnant, because if you take it too early there may not be enough hCG in your urine to give the positive result. Most home tests are over 90% accurate if the instructions are followed properly. You need to take the test after you have missed your period. If you get a negative result wait a week and take it again, and is you still believe you are pregnant after a negative result, visit your doctor.

Pregnancy can be wonderful, complex, exciting, frustrating and much more. It is important to start taking care of yourself and your baby as soon as possible so once you have taken a pregnancy test if it comes out positive get started on your prenatal care and look at what you can do to give both of you the best pregnancy possible.
