Most women are convinced that a missed period certainly means a pregnancy. However, they take a pregnancy test, although they are 99% sure of their pregnancy. Because they don’t want to take the time and spend the money, and because they prefer to find out if they are pregnant in the privacy of their own home, most women prefer to take a home pregnancy test, although they have to take it and interpret it all alone – even if there may be some doubts.

Many of you probably think that a missed period is one of the surest signs of a pregnancy, so consider this possible scenario: You have missed your period and you decide to take a pregnancy test because you still have a 1% doubt. But what would you do if the test result is a negative one? What would you think? Are you pregnant or not? This is a very frequent situation and to know how to react, you should know which could be the reasons for that happening.

First of all, you don’t have to worry because it is very likely that you’re not pregnant and your period is missing from other reasons. Some of those reasons could be: a very stressful period, a sudden loss of weight or an organic illness, reasons which were proved by specialists and confirmed by normal women.

Also, it is very possible that your test result could be a false one. There could be many reasons of getting a false negative result and the most common is the moment you take the test. If you take it too early it’s possible to have not enough hCG (pregnancy hormone) to be detected and your test will give you a negative result even if you are pregnant. It’s recommended to take it 2 weeks after ovulation or the day you have missed your period.

For getting an accurate result you should take care of the test sensitivity as well(and carefully check the best-before date). If the test is an expired one it is very likely to give you a false result. It is very important to take a more sensitive test, because those which have a higher sensitivity level have a bigger possibility to detect a smaller amount of hCG and to give you an accurate result earlier than the others.

You have to be careful as well with the test instructions and follow them exactly. Also, you should take the test with your first morning urine because it has the biggest amount of hCG – and try to not drink too much water before you take it, to avoid “urine dilution”. Then, take care to saturate the test stick with your urine and to read its result within the “time reaction” to make sure you are given an accurate result.

As you can see, there are many possible reasons for getting a negative pregnancy test so you don’t have to worry. However, if you are sure you are not in any of these situations you should see a doctor and retest.
