When a woman thinks she may be pregnant her usual first thing to do is buy and use a home test to confirm or deny it. Some go straight to the doctor, but most prefer a private testing first. Home pregnancy tests look for the pregnancy hormone hCG which is present in the urine. It can detect it as early as one week after a missed period and is reliable at that time. A test can be done before that, but as the level of hCG is lower, it may not detect it in the urine giving you a false negative.
It is a simple test to do. The woman places the stick or in a few cases the container, into her urine stream (ideally the first in the morning). After a short time of waiting there will be an indicator that lets you know whether you are pregnant or not. The accuracy is higher if done a week or more after a missed period. Then it ranges from 97-99% accurate. Be careful as some drugs, such as those used to treat infertility, can create a false positive result.
You can get home pregnancy tests from a variety of places, supermarkets, grocery stores, pharmacies and so on and they are usually quite inexpensive, depending on where you buy and whether you are buying singular or packs. Women buy multi pack tests because they may not follow the instructions carefully or may want to recheck the result they got.
A home pregnancy test is very similar to the one a doctor will carry out, though as well as a urine test it is possible for a doctor to carry out a blood test too. Both look for the hCG hormone though. Not all the tests are equally sensitive, each one looks for different levels of concentration of the hormone, which means some are sensitive enough to find the hormone 1 day after a missed period, whereas others may not.
