Taking a home pregnancy test should be fairly easy.. All you have to do is to introduce a stick in your urine and wait for a few minutes to find out the result: two pink lines = pregnant, one pink line = not pregnant. What could be easier than that? Well, written down it seems pretty easy, but when you put it into practice you can have many confusing surprises. Another important reason could be the test’s sensitivity. Home pregnancy tests are different by their capacity of detecting the levels of hCG. So, some pregnancy tests could be more sensitive than others, depending on the hCG level they can detect – the lower the level, the more sensitive the test. Getting a faint positive could mean that the test you are using is not sensitive enough to get a clear result, so go get a more sensitive one.

Also, if you are taking the test too early you can get a faint positive, because the hCG level can be too low to be detected by the pregnancy test. So, make sure your calculation is a good one and re-test after a few days to find out the correct result.

Another possible issue which can lead to a faint line could be the urine dilution. For an accurate result, it is recommended to use your first morning urine and take care of not drinking too much water before taking the test. You have to be careful – reading the test result in the time limit specified on the testing box (usually 5-10 minutes) is very important, because otherwise you can get an evaporation line and you wouldn’t know how to understand it.

Another important reason of getting a faint positive could be a chemical pregnancy. If your test is faintly positive for a couple of days and then you get a negative result, you may have had a very early miscarriage, so you should see a doctor right away.
