Faint positive pregnancy test – Is it accurate?

The most handy way to find out the truth about a possible pregnancy is a pregnancy test. There are two test types: clinic tests and home ones, but most women prefer home ones, not only because they are cheaper, but also because of the privacy that they offer. Also, most home tests have some features which are also very important and influence women’s choices: accuracy of over 99%, easy to use, easy to read etc.

A home pregnancy test, as we’ve already said, is very easy to use and that’s due to its very detailed instructions which don’t let you have any doubt if used right. Regarding the way of reading its result we can also say that it’s very easy, but sometimes some surprises can appear which can confuse you. Such a surprise could be a faint positive pregnancy test. What would you do if you would be in this situation ? Would you think it’s an accurate result or not?

First of all, what does a faint positive pregnancy test mean ? It means that the second line, which usually shows you that you’re pregnant, is a faint one. This is a very frequent situation, but there are many possible reasons for this – so you don’t have to worry because most of them can be avoided if you are careful.

A frequent one could be the moment of taking the test. If you take it too early it’s possible to have a very small amount of hCG in your body, which is harder to detect – in which case you’ll get a faint result(because, as you possibly know, those home tests work by detecting the presence and levels of hCG in a woman’s body, hormone which appears only when she is pregnant). If you want to get the most accurate result follow the doctor’s recommendation and take the test 2 weeks after ovulation or the day you have missed your period, but if you are anxious to find out and decide to take it earlier, then make sure that you use a more sensitive test – because it can detect a smaller amount of hCG, therefore giving you a more accurate result.

Other possible reasons could be those regarding the way that you are taking the test. You have to pay attention to the instructions and follow them exactly, because there are many frequent mistakes which can lead to a faint result and you won’t be able to interpret it. Some of those mistakes could be:
– the moment you read the result: make sure you are reading it within the time frame specified, because otherwise the second line can already be evaporated and you can get a faint positive result
– the test stick is not saturated enough with your urine – which can also lead to a faint result.
– the cup you are using for your urine has soap or detergent leftovers which can also compromise the result.

Usually, a faint positive pregnancy test is a positive one, but if you want to be sure that your result is accurate, take another test after a few days, making sure that you are taking it correctly, without any mistake.
