Nowadays, you don’t have to wait for a missed period or for some pregnancy symptoms to find out if you are pregnant or not. You now have the easiest way to find out if you are pregnant or not: the pregnancy tests. There are two types of pregnancy tests: clinic tests(based on blood) and home tests(based on urine); due to its lower price and to the intimacy that it can offer them, most women prefer a home pregnancy test.

As you probably know, home pregnancy tests have an accuracy of 97% to 99% so there is a small possibility for them to give a false result. If you would take two tests and you would get a positive result and then a negative one, which would you think is the true one? If you don’t want to have a baby you will probably wonder: Is it possible for a pregnancy test to give a false positive result? Well, it was proved that it is indeed possible to get such a result but there are some specific reasons that can lead to this.

First of all, you have to know that home pregnancy tests work by detecting the hCG in a woman’s body, hormone which appears when she gets pregnant. So a big question comes up: How can a pregnancy test say that hCG is there if this is not true? (because she is not pregnant). Well, what you probably don’t know yet is that there are some types of drugs which contain hCG and, if a woman takes one of them, she will certainly have hCG in her body – so the test will detect it and will give a positive result although she is not pregnant. Some of these drugs could be: anti-Parkinson’s medicines, some diuretics and some tranquilizers.

Secondly, your pregnancy test can give you a false positive result not only if it detects a certain hCG in your body, but from other reasons too. For example, one of those reasons could be the improper testing. You have to read carefully the test directions before testing because you can make some minor mistakes but which can lead to a false result. Firstly, make sure that the cup you are using for your urine is a clean one and it hasn’t any leftover soap or detergent because those can lead to a false result too.

To avoid such a situation you should also take care of the moment you read the result. It is important to see which is the result within the stipulated time frame, because if you wait too long you can get a false result – in our case a false positive one.

Another reason for getting a positive result and then a negative one could be a chemical pregnancy. It is possible that your first test result could be a positive one and the second one a negative one because at first you could have really been pregnant and then (at the second test) you could have really not been pregnant anymore – because your pregnancy had probably ended with an early miscarriage.

As you can see, there could be many reasons of getting a false positive pregnancy test, but if you re-test and re-test and you still have doubts you should see a doctor and take a blood pregnancy test because it is more accurate than any other.
