Every home pregnancy test works the same way, it looks for a hormone in the woman’s urine that is only present if she is pregnant. This hormone is called hCG or human chorionic gonadotropin and it is produced as soon as a fertilized egg reaches the uterus lining and implants itself. After an egg is fertilized it needs to travel to the uterus and this can take several days. hCG is in low level at first but it doubles every 2 days and so about 14 days after implantation there are sufficient levels of hCG for some tests to detect. Pharmaceutical companies that make these test may claim the accuracy is just as good on the day a woman misses her period but studies show this is not actually the case. For a start each woman is different and hCG levels vary between them. In fact out of 18 pregnancy kits tested only 1 was accurate on that day. The best time was the week after the missed period.
Another factor in the accuracy of tests is how they are taken. Women need to look at the expiry date and make sure it is not out of date. Tests also should not have come into contact with water or moist air. If she is concerned about the state of the packaging then do not buy that test. The biggest thing though that women can do to improve the accuracy of their results is to follow the instructions that come with the test. Follow them exactly and if done a week after a missed period the results can be trusted to be at least 97% accurate. Some tests ask a woman to pee directly on a stick while others ask you to dip it in a cup of your urine, and others can allow you to do both, so chose whichever you are more comfortable with.
